How does a Money Coach help?
In order to get better at something you need guidance and feedback.
Some activities give you instant feedback. If you brake too hard or drive too fast into a corner, you will get feedback from the car. If you run 10 miles when you have done no training, you will get feedback from your body.
So, for activities that have a strong biomechanical element, there are feedback mechanisms in place. But in themselves, they are not enough.
Human nature is to seek the easiest way to do something, the one that requires the least effort, the one that is most comfortable. This creates a deviation from the optimal path and makes it difficult to self-correct.
A coach is there to identify our blind spots and correct those deviations.
Dealing with money is almost entirely emotional and the desire for comfort seeking is very powerful. This means that our feedback mechanisms reinforce our existing behaviour, instead of helping us correct it. So, we shy away from things around money that make us feel uncomfortable and our patterns do not change.
In addition, when it comes to money, we are massively ignorant of our blind spots because our behaviour is sub-conscious and instinctive.
Because money behaviour is rarely discussed we have no framework for understanding how money makes us feel. Most people don’t have anyone they can talk to about money, someone who will listen fully and without judgement.
