I recently gave a talk at Kings College, Cambridge to the Entrepreneurship Lab. Setting up your own business is hard work and very few people enjoy the finance side. But, it’s pretty vital to be engaged.
Having coached a number of business owners, it’s clear to me that our personal relationship with money leaks into our business finances. That’s because how we feel about ourselves and how we feel about money doesn’t disappear when it comes to our businesses. We don’t suddenly become these uber-rational, logic driven, numbers based, transparent individuals when we’re looking at our businesses.
Money is not just numbers. It’s tied to many emotional things like security, significance, power, status, and control. These follow us to work, particularly when we ‘are the work’.
So, if you’re feeling the pressure or finding it hard to engage with your business finances, that’s pretty common. If you didn’t develop conscious, positive engagement with your personal finances, then trying to do it when it’s your business – and there’s a lot more at stake – can feel daunting.
If you struggle with asking for money, chasing payments, engaging with the numbers, feeling anxious or frantic, then Money Coaching can help. Discomfort around finances is normal, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
