Money doesn’t come with instructions….only emotions.

Why does that matter?

Money runs through our lives and yet most of us have never been shown how to understand or manage it.

Just imagine if someone gave you a car and asked you to drive, but you’d never had a single lesson. We all know how that would end. And that’s why we have driving tests.

Because even though you do get better over time, you need a solid foundation to build from. You need to know what’s dangerous and what’s safe. And what will lead to problems in the future.

But we don’t do that with money.

And a many of us were told we simply don’t talk about it.

But not being told about money doesn’t mean we don’t know anything about it.

We know a lot about money based on the behaviour of the people around us.

If you were told ‘we don’t talk about money’ then you might conclude that money was really scary, dangerous or disgusting and that’s why we don’t talk about it.

When I was growing up, the message I got was that money was so important that you could never waste it, and that you should always try to spend the minimum amount possible. As a family we hung onto money for dear life. We had money but we couldn’t enjoy it and we never felt safe.

If your parents or caregivers argued about money – and nearly everybody does – then the message you might have got is that money causes conflict.

This is what I call your ‘subconscious inheritance’.

It’s what you know and feel about money, even if you were never shown how to understand or manage it. This subconscious inheritance comes with a whole set of emotions because it’s based on the emotional behaviour of the people around us as we grew up.

That’s what primarily driving your money behaviour today.

And when you don’t understand it, or can’t change, it causes shame, guilt, confusion, anxiety and a whole raft of negative feelings.

So, don’t blame yourself – it’s not your fault.

Don’t blame your caregivers – they have their own subconscious inheritance issues.

And don’t stay stuck.
